Assistant Superintendent's Office
Instructor: Ms. L. Boerum
Lisa Boerum serves as the Assistant Superintendent and as the building principal of Little Flower School. She is fortunate to be able to work with agency administration, the distict superintendent, and the staff and students on a daily basis. The responsibilities range from working with indiviual students, co-teaching classes, collaborating on unit and assessment development, facilitating faculty work sessions, coordinating the scheduling of classes, working with the business administrator, Ann Romeo, on the Federal Funds, overseeing the technology committee and managing the day to day operations of the building.

Lisa has help from Marie Caporusso, one of our most seasoned master teachers, who is also an administrator part time. She oversees the crisis and security staff, and manages the student discipline in the building. It is an honor and a pleasure to work with people whose strengths compliment one another.

George Grigg, the Superintendent of Little Flower Union Free School District, oversees the operations at a district level and spends a great deal of time and effort interacting with the State Education and Department, and the rate setting and budget departments up in Albany. Since we do not have a community tax base, all of our programing, staffing and budgetting need approval from the State. We are fortunate to have such an activist working on our behalf to make sure our school is equipped to serve our population adequately.
Department Announcements
Welcome to a New Start
Welcome to a great start to the new year.  The new behavior plan is taking off and is showing some positive results as our Crisis rooms are not as filled as the beginning of last year and the number of incident reports are much reduced for the first week of school.

Our first set of common planning meetings was filled with purposeful converstion aroun our new point card, and by the end of the day, the PBIS team met and collaborated democratically to arrive ata win-win solution.  The revsions were made and we continue to monitor is effectiveness.

Our Showcase Celebration for Learning is scheduled for May 27th this year. We will be working on behavior management strategies through our training in Behavior Management Through Adventure during September and October.  These traiings will provide teachers with the tools that can help students stay in classes and engage more honestly in thier learning.

I look forward to making progress and celebrating our gains this quarter!
The Showcase Celebration of Learning
July 16, 2009

The Showcase Celebration of Learning was a big success for the students and staff here at Little Flower. We had over 30 guests visit the school and spend quality time with the students and staff members. Each class prepared projects to share, evidencing their engagement in the learning process. Here are some of the comments that came back from the day:

“I just wanted you to know I thought the showcase was a huge success.  My students enjoyed the whole day.  They were extremely proud to share their book with any and everyone.  Ms. Dougal was extra creative in posting signs from the gym to the respite directing traffic.  Our guest posed questions to my students that helped them elaborate on how we created the book.  My students really enjoyed us sitting and eating lunch together (how cool was that!!).   Keep up the good work!!!!” (teacher)

“I had a marvelous day yesterday.  Sean Colfer's class had thoughtful research presentations on topics ranging from global warming, foster care, teenage pregnancy to child care. The students made powerful connections from their research to future positive social actions and they responded in a sophisticated manner to questions and comments from adults as well as fellow classmates.  The poetry slam was outstanding.  It was a truly inspirational day.” (guest)

There are many positive comments that came our way during and after the showcase. I am so pleased that the effort and progress form all the staff here was recognized not only by the guests, but by one another. The day illustrated the benefits that are reaped from collaboration and collegiality, from sharing expertise and from the courage and initiative to maintain and commitment to understanding.

As we move toward preparing for our third Showcase Celebration and Learning, I am certain that staff members will begin the year with the end in mind and I look forward to celebrating the learning that continues to grow.

Teaching and Learning Through the Year
This year the teachers and students have engaged in active learningthrough collaborative reserach projects using the Research Think Models from Dr. Ross J. Todd.  The students used the Big 6 Research process to work through the models and to create their products.  These projects show evidence of the Dipsositions of Practice developed by Dr. Giselle Martin-Kniep.

The teachers also reflected on the expereince and  linked thier work to one of the action reserach questions developed by the staff through our staff devlopment work.

The reflections on the process and the work will be available during the June 11 showcase.

I want to recognize all the staff and students, and their effort towards engaging in the teaching and learning throughout the year.  Each one of you has helped in the effort to  transform our school culture into a developing learning community.  Thank you form the bottom of my heart.
